Polestar 4 Expands with Upright SUV Variant

Polestar 4 SUV will join the brand’s European and Asian line‑up this September, expanding the model range that previously consisted only of a low‑slung coupe sold in the United States.

Launch timeline and market availability

The Swedish‑Chinese EV maker confirmed on July 7 that an all‑wheel‑drive version of the Polestar 4 SUV will arrive in showrooms across Europe and Asia by early September. The company set September 2 as the official sales start date, with orders opening shortly before that. Production will take place at Polestar’s Busan plant in South Korea, a site already used for the brand’s other models.

U.S. customers will not see the new SUV, as the Department of Commerce imposed a sales ban on Polestar vehicles in June because of concerns over the brand’s connected‑vehicle technology linking back to China. Volvo Cars, another Geely‑owned marque, received a separate exemption in May, allowing it to keep selling in the United States.

Because the ban applies to all Polestar models, the company has shifted its focus toward markets where the brand already enjoys a growing presence. In Europe, where electric vehicle adoption is accelerating, dealers are preparing dedicated launch events and test‑drive opportunities to showcase the SUV’s higher seating position and expanded cargo capacity. Asian markets, particularly South Korea and Japan, will see the vehicle positioned alongside existing Polestar offerings, reinforcing the brand’s premium‑electric portfolio.

Design differences and technical specs

The SUV version adopts a more upright rear profile, adding a rear window that the U.S.-market Polestar 4 coupe lacks. Both variants share retuned chassis components aimed at improving handling and ride quality. Under the hood, the models rely on Polestar’s 400‑volt architecture, offering up to 544 horsepower in dual‑motor configurations.

According to the filing, rear‑wheel‑drive versions can achieve as much as 391 miles on a single charge under Europe’s WLTP test cycle. The company has not yet disclosed pricing for the SUV, but it indicated that the model will be offered in “the majority of Polestar markets.”

Beyond the exterior changes, the SUV incorporates a higher roofline that creates a more spacious cabin, allowing rear passengers to benefit from an increased headroom envelope. Interior ergonomics have been refined to include adjustable lumbar support and a larger infotainment screen, reflecting Polestar’s emphasis on driver‑focused technology. The vehicle’s aerodynamic package has been tuned to balance the larger frontal area with efficient airflow management, helping to preserve the long‑range capability despite the added size.

Mechanical upgrades include revised suspension geometry and dampers calibrated for a blend of comfort and agility, ensuring that the SUV can deliver the same spirited driving experience that the Polestar 4 coupe is known for. The dual‑motor all‑wheel‑drive system provides torque vectoring that enhances cornering stability, while the rear‑wheel‑drive configuration retains the efficiency benefits that underpin the impressive WLTP range figure.

The redesign reflects Polestar’s intent to broaden the appeal of the 4 series while preserving its sporty character. “With Polestar 4 SUV, we’re building on that success by offering even more versatility while staying true to the Polestar 4 character,” a company statement read, adding that the vehicle is “wrapped in a stunning design.”

Looking ahead, the addition of an SUV could help Polestar address demand for higher‑seating‑position vehicles in regions where crossovers dominate sales. However, the brand’s inability to sell the model in the United States may limit overall volume growth, especially given the country’s large EV market.
