Most of the gadgets the V&A is returning had been purchased at an public sale on 18 April 1874 at Garrards, the London jewellers who keep the UK’s Crown Jewels. The items covered by the mortgage settlement represent just a fraction of the Asante artifacts held by British museums and private collectors around the world.
