Hyundai’s 2025-and-newer Ioniq 5 electric SUV comes with bigger batteries that charge faster and provide more range. The standard pack grew from 58 to 63 kWh, while the larger one expanded from 77 to 84 kWh. The upgrades allow the vehicle to add roughly 50 miles of range and achieve a higher peak charge rate compared to the older version.
Real-World Range Gains
We tested a 2022 all-wheel-drive Limited model equipped with the long-range battery. That vehicle managed 210 miles of range on our 75-mph highway route. While that number was not particularly impressive, the charging numbers were superb for the time. When hooked up to a DC fast-charger, the 2022 model took just 33 minutes to go from 10 to 90 percent.
Charging peaked at 231 kilowatts and averaged 117 kilowatts. The Ioniq added 150 miles of range in just 23 minutes during that session. A 2026 all-wheel-drive Limited, the direct replacement for our initial tester, achieved 260 miles of range on the same route. The new model also cut down the 10-to-90 percent charge time by two minutes despite needing more energy to fill its larger capacity.
Charging Speed and Convenience
The newer Ioniq 5s also adopt a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port. This change makes finding a charger more convenient due to the Tesla Supercharger network. During the 10-to-90 percent test, the 2026 Ioniq reached a peak charge rate of 260 kilowatts and averaged 140 kilowatts.
The new battery adds 72.5 kilowatts during that charge window. It also adds 150 miles of range in just 16 minutes. Both the 2022 car and the new model wore the same 255/45R-20 Michelin Primacy Tour all-season tires. We also account for differences in weather, though both tests occurred on similarly temperate summer days.
These improvements are sizable enough that if you are in the market for a used model, it could be worth confirming which battery is installed. The results also reflect the rapidly evolving EV market and how quickly automakers are improving their hardware. The Ioniq 5’s updated range and charging times make an already-impressive EV even more desirable.
