Software-Defined Vehicles Will Transform Auto Industry

Q: What will be the biggest difference between a software-defined vehicle in 2023 and a software-defined vehicle in 2030? Milavec: In today’s vehicles, a driver’s experience is still primarily defined by hardware, but this is quickly shifting to software. With OTA updates, an SDV can stay in contact with its environment, the vehicle owner and the manufacturer to drive continuous innovation over the vehicle’s lifetime. This means that introducing new content and features doesn’t have to stop at the end of the production line – they can be introduced to vehicles already on the road, helping automakers strengthen brand loyalty,…

Smart’s European dealers pleased with direct-sales plan

BRESCIA, Italy – Smart dealers say they are happy with the brand’s change to a direct-sales agency model, which the joint Mercedes-Geely brand initiated last year by negotiating new contracts ahead of the launch of the #1 full-electric small SUV. “We are happy about the commission structure we are getting for the #1; our only complaint is that we need more product, so we don’t have consumers waiting for too long,” Ossuama Kaddoura, a Paris-based dealer who is also president of ASP (Smart Partner Association) told Automotive News Europe last week on the sidelines of a dealer event in Brescia.…

Auto manufacturers are not trying to squeeze retailers out of business

I’ve covered the auto industry for a long time, but mostly from the factory, automaker, supplier or Wall Street perspective. Before I got to Automotive News, I probably wrote more about the consumer experience than the dealer experience. That all made sense when I was writing for general interest newspapers or a financial wire service. But I’ve always admired the entrepreneurial spirit of auto dealers, and I’m glad to have more exposure to them since I joined Automotive News almost four and a half years ago. I remember David Hult, CEO of Asbury Automotive, before the pandemic talked about buying…

Auto suppliers scramble to develop alcohol detection technology

Asahi Kasei will ultimately not serve as the Tier 1 supplier of the technology to automakers, but it will likely get it into passenger vehicles through other in-cabin components, Franchy said. The big company has been broadening its business base and seeking new markets. When Asahi Kasei is known at all, it’s typically for its decades-old position in chemicals. But in more recent years, the company has built a presence in structural…

MOSCOW — As the exodus of Western automakers narrows options for Russian consumers, Chinese automakers are filling the gap, forcing Russians to overcome their reluctance to embrace Chinese brands and accept higher prices. Chinese brands such as Haval, Chery and Geely now account for almost 40 percent of Russia’s new-car sales, data from analytical agency Autostat and consulting company PPK showed, up from less than 10 percent in January-February of 2022. Chinese brands have jumped on the opportunity left by the exit of automakers including Renault, Nissan and Mercedes. But there are teething problems. Reuters spoke to several Russian car…

Canada Drives obtained creditor protection March 20 under an order from the Supreme Court of British Columbia, according to a notice from court-appointed monitor PricewaterhouseCoopers Inc. While the company has focused mainly on ecommerce since 2020, Canada Drives was founded in 2010 as a lead-generating business, matching consumers looking for financing with local dealerships. Under CCAA protection, it plans to restructure its business, winding down the “capital intensive” online sales segment, and refocusing on the financing matching service it has provided for more than a decade. As part of the restructuring plan, Canada Drives also intends to maintain one aspect…
