The JL-2A draws from the Willys MB military Jeep used in WWII, now repurposed for modern off-roading.

Jeep’s latest Wrangler edition, the JL-2A, celebrates the heritage of the brand’s first civilian model, the Willys CJ-2A, which launched in 1945. The original was derived from the Willys MB military Jeep used during World War II, later repurposed for agricultural and ranching needs. The JL-2A preserves that enduring toughness while incorporating contemporary Wrangler advancements.

The JL-2A builds on the Wrangler Rubicon platform, featuring electronic locking front and rear differentials alongside a detachable anti-roll bar. Pre-orders for the 2027 model open in October, with the package adding $4,995 to the base Rubicon price. The CJ-2A came in olive green or tan, and the JL-2A continues that tradition: the two-door is available in Gobi (tan), while the four-door is offered in ’41 (olive green). Additional colors, including Bright White and Ghost, are also part of the lineup.

Design elements pay tribute to the CJ-2A with 17-inch retro-style wheels in bright orange, matching the Sunset Red wheels of the original. Dark Metallic Grey grille accents and orange tow hooks reinforce the vintage connection. Inside, orange stitching, Nappa Heritage Tan and Bison Brown upholstery, and Willys-Overland medallions on the shifter evoke the past. A rear swing gate conceals a plaque marking Jeep’s shift from military to civilian production.

The JL-2A maintains the Rubicon’s off-road prowess, offering a 3.6-liter V-6 (285 hp) or a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (270 hp), paired with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. Standard equipment includes four-wheel drive, electronic locking differentials, and a 4.10 rear-axle ratio. The Convenience package, featuring a front TrailCam and integrated washer, is also included.

At $4,995, the package costs just $115 more than a similarly equipped Rubicon. With the 2027 Rubicon starting at $47,810, the JL-2A will likely begin around $53,000. This edition bridges Jeep’s military origins with modern off-road capability, catering to buyers who cherish both tradition and performance.

Since the CJ-2A’s introduction, Jeep has sold over 5 million Wranglers, transforming the vehicle from a farming tool into a global symbol. The JL-2A’s limited production and nostalgic details position it as a collector’s item rather than a mainstream model. Its pricing remains competitive with the Rubicon, ensuring accessibility for enthusiasts seeking a premium homage to Jeep’s legacy.

The JL-2A’s launch shows how Jeep continues to honor its past while evolving for contemporary drivers. Its blend of heritage and innovation reflects the brand’s enduring appeal in the off-road market.
